What Do The Simple Folk Do?

English Country Song and Dance For Everyone.
This is a participatory program for all ages,
where the singing of rousing rounds and
dancing a simple country dance—combined
with historical fact and storytelling—give
an experience of how the common folk
entertained themselves throughout most of history.

I Do: Marriage Customs Throughout the Ages.

In this entertaining and informative lecture on marriage customs, Tames Alan brings to life her vast knowledge of social history. Have you ever wondered why we throw rice at brides or where we got the custom of shivaree? Come walk down the marriage aisle and learn where many of our most-cherished customs originated.

In this one-hour program, Tames will explore the complex rituals, both ceremonial and civil, of one of life's most important rites of passage-the finding and binding of a mate. She will explain how a bride was chosen-whether for political or poetic reasons-the contract and ceremony, what the bride wore and the guests ate, and the culmination of the event, the ritual of the wedding night itself. As with all of Tames' programs, there will be a question-and-answer period at the end.
